First Miles Music record reissued on CD!
The first recording for Miles Music took place at PRT Studios off London’s Edgware Road on the 20th November 1985.
John’s Miles’ idea for the first record on his new label was to combine the experience of a saxophonist of long standing in the UK jazz world with a new and upcoming talent, alongside a rhythm section brought together especially for the session that would be complimentary but interesting.
For this initial recording with John as producer he engaged the help of the experienced Bruce Talbot in the control room, and playing alongside Tommy Whittle and Alan Barnes were the mercurial but established Mick Pyne on piano, Alan Jackson who was known for his drumming at the freer end of the jazz spectrum, and finally another young man whose family name alone suggested great promise and which was proving to be the case, Alec Dankworth.
After a recent review of the Miles Music tape archive and with the realisation that the survival of these recordings was reaching a critical point, the idea of a CD release was further encouraged by the re-discovery of an additional track that could not be included on the original LP release with its running time restrictions. In fact there turned out to be three complete takes of the tune, and with the luxury of the longer duration of a CD they are all now included.
From the initial discussion with Alan Barnes about a possible CD re-release, and after consulting Alan Jackson, Carol Pyne and Alec, Miles Music is very pleased to make these recordings available once more.
The CD cover includes additional sleeve notes from Alan giving more detail about the background to the recording, and the inclusion of the three versions of the additional number, all of which have merit, and illustrate so well the spirit of improvisation that gives the jazz form its unique voice.
